Work Study
Program Description
Work-Study is a federally funded program that provides job opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students who are eligible to participate in need based financial aid programs. Work-Study student workers will be placed in various departments on and off campus to help offset a portion of their educational expenses. Work-Study at CSUSB provides opportunities for students to secure academic or career-related jobs, and develop job skills. Students may also apply to participate in the America Reads and Counts programs as a tutor in local school districts or agencies. Interested students may apply by completing a separate application to be considered for this program: Salaries range from $8.00 to $17.26 per hour. Student workers may work a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Work-Study participants should approach their job assignment with a sense of responsibility that would be expected in any job. To be considered for the Work-Study programs, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and indicate on the FAFSA your interest in part-time employment as part of your financial aid. Apply FAFSA. Eligible students will be instructed to contact the Student Employment Team to verify eligibility and secure the Work Authorization and Terms of Employment prior to employment.
Work Study participants and their Supervisors are required to participate and submit a Student Performance Evaluation [PDF] and / or Supervisor Performance Evaluation [PDF] once a year.
Federal Work-Study On-Campus
On-Campus Work-Study jobs are available at CSUSB. Work-Study students provide a valuable contribution to CSUSB in the services they perform. Students will be placed in various departments throughout the campus. In return for their services, students are paid an hourly wage. In the State of California, student workers must be paid the current minimum hourly wage rate of $8.00/hr. Please refer to the Work-Study Wage Guide to determine the appropriate wage rate. The maximum hours a Work-Study student may work is 20 hours per week.
Students who are awarded Work-Study and wish to work On-campus may view available jobs at Job Postings link. Instructions for the hiring procedures and placement deadlines can be found Work Study Job Listings. Students must first contact the SET to determine their eligibility to participate in the program.
Work-Study students should approach this assignment with a sense of responsibility that would be expected in any job. All student workers will be required to complete a Confidentiality Access and Compliance Form. Students employed in areas that handle student records must adhere to the Privacy Act of 1974.
Federal Work-Study Off-Campus
The Federal Work-Study Program offers eligible students the opportunity to earn money to help defray their educational expenses through part-time employment. CSUSB will attempt to place students with Off-campus employers in educationally beneficial positions. Placement may be in public institutions or in non-profit or profit-making enterprises. Pay rates will be comparable to those paid for similar positions within the employing organization.

Tutoring Programs
The America Reads and America Counts Programs provide an opportunity for students who need financial assistance to earn portion of their college expenses through part-time employment. Participants provide tutoring to children Kindergarted-6th grade in reading and Kindergarten-9th grade in math. Students will be placed in the local school districts and local reading programs.
Tutor's beginning hourly rate is $10.00 per hour and they may work up to 20 hours per week. America Reads/Counts students can gain valuable experience and skills to improve their resume. As a participant, students will also have an opportunity to connect with their Off-campus community. The Student Employment Team will notify selected students if they are accepted to the program. Students will be instructed to register for the ESEC 545 for the reading and math tutor programs. The ESEC 545 class provides tutor training for students to work with low literacy and at risk adolescents in reading. Topics include literacy methods, multicultural issues, learning disabilities and use of educational software.
Student must take their Work Authorization, Terms of Employment, and a copy of their Financial Aid award to their interview to validate their Work-Study award. Instructions for the hiring procedures and placement deadlines can be found at Work Study Hiring Process.
By state law, in order to be employed with a school district requires the tutor to pass a criminal background clearance check; a drug screen and TB test. Students will receive an Institutional Grant to cover this expense.
